Hélène Kuhn

Thursday 20 February 2020

We have met Helene Kuhn, new face of french cinema in her Parisian's flat.

Who are you?
Hélène Kuhn: I’m a Parisian. I was born in Detroit.
What is your background? How did you become an actress?
I’ve danced since I was a kid, which is why I’ve always been comfortable on stage. I had the wonderful opportunity to sing in a children’s choir in Paris and to go on tour to give concerts. This fed my passion and my desire to perform. I have a lot of siblings and cousins. We spent all our time dressing up and putting on shows. In high school, I signed up at Le Cours Simon. When I was 19, I went on my own to study at the New York Conservatory, where I lived and worked for 5 years
What are your current projects?
This month, I’m in the short film Sans Elles by Thomas Baillet, alongside Alexia Giordano, with Nils Tavernier as the Director of Photography.
I’m also preparing for the lead role of a feature film by Christophe Deroo.
What’s a typical day like for you?
I try to watch a movie and I work out every day (sport, dance, yoga, etc.). The first thing you do when you wake up? I kiss the man of my life, I meditate and I write in my journal. The last thing you do before going to bed? I light a candle, I meditate about my day, I write.

What are your 3 favourite films?
That question is too hard to answer. A lot of women directors have inspired me in recent years. In no particular order: films by Brit Marling, like Another Earth, Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade, Atlantics by Mati Diop, Portrait of a Lady on Fire by Céline Sciamma, films by Greta Gerwig, such as Frances Ha, Lady Bird…
Whom would you like to have dinner with if it could be anyone at all?
My female ancestors. For example, my grandmother whom I never met, or my great-grandmother who was an artist in Detroit in the 1930s.
What is your relationship with fashion?
It’s festive and tragic. I like suits. Masculine/feminine. I like fashion when it is alive and when it tells a strong story. I like stage costumes, the artists at Madame Arthur, cabarets by Brecht, Bob Wilson or Matthew Barney, the dancers of Pina Bausch and traditional costumes from all over the world.
If you had to describe Sessùn in just a few words?
Natural, responsible, classic.

Merci Hélène !
