A leading figure amongst the current young generation of Japanese photographers, Yoshinori Mizutani casts a fresh eye over the urban environment of his home city, Tokyo. Deeply steeped in Japanese pictorial tradition, the photographer explores everyday life in Tokyo and captures scenes bordering on the fantastical. His framing and strong bright colours lend his images a certain strangeness. Shapes, textures, colour shades and depth of field combine to create a visual vocabulary that is at the same time both poetic and pop art. Visions of dreams or nightmares, Yoshinori Mizutani's birds saturate the world of the city by their presence and restore to it its mystery. This work forms part of the Des Oiseaux collection, which, through the particular visions and eyes of different artists, celebrates the immense presence of birds in a world in which they are today vulnerable and under threat. The ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre has written a special essay to accompany each collection of photographs. For those of Yoshinori Mizutani, he highlights and focuses on the gregarious behaviour of the birds.
